Water purification with UV lamps

UV systems for water purification

UV systems can be used to disinfect water in a wide variety of applications including drinking water, waste water, process water, swimming pools and ponds. UV lamps are available in wattages from 4 W up to 1000 W, allowing you to design disinfection systems for small (litres/min) up to very large municipal installations that use several hundred lamps.

Residential equipment

Residential equipment

Households can purify their drinking water by installing UV water purification systems at the point of entry in the home, at the point of use (such as kitchen sink) or via separate purifiers. Rainwater can also be disinfected before use. These UV systems are often combined with filters to remove other substances from the water (chlorine, particles). Lamp wattages up to 25 W are used.

Municipal installations

Municipal installations

In municipal installations, UV is always used in combination with other purification technologies. Disinfection levels are regulated by the government and our UV systems are designed, validated and installed to guarantee water quality. Most installations allow lamp dimming to adapt the power to variations in water quality and water flow. Lamp wattages up to 1000 W.

Industrial applications

Industrial applications

Industries require clean and disinfected water for many purposes – production processes (chemistry, cosmetics), rinsing and cleaning packaging material for food and beverages, agriculture in greenhouses, and advanced oxidation processes for the semiconductor industry. In all these industries water is used, recycled and reused. Typical lamp wattages range from 25 W to 250 W.

A word of caution

UV-C lamps present minimum risk when used by professionals who know how to use them. They must shield their eyes and skin to avoid light damage and severe injuries to the eyes and skin. We advise customers to exercise caution when selecting equipment and look for evidence of third-party testing as well as certification of device materials and electrical components by well-known organisations such as NSF, UL, CSA, DVGW-OVGW or other international requirements as applicable.

At this moment, none of our UV-C lamps are certified or approved under any applicable laws as a medical device and, as such, Signify and/or any of its group companies do not currently intend for them to be used as medical devices anywhere in the world. Plants and/or materials that are exposed to higher dosages of UV-C may become damaged and/or discoloured.
